The fifth installment of Atlus’ critically acclaimed life-simulator-rendezvous-RPG series has finally arrived on Xbox and PC – here’s why it’s worth your time.

When it first launched on PS4 in 2017, Persona 5 became an instant classic. Atlus’ unique combination of high school life simulator and action-packed RPG has been refined over the course of the four main games, and Persona 5 has taken all the lessons learned in the process to create another totally awesome game in the series.

Persona 5, the newest mainline game in the series, brought a whole new level of production value to a tried-and-tested concept. It also introduced new layers of complexity in terms of both gameplay mechanics and story elements, resulting in a richer and more satisfying experience. Over the course of a story spanning more than 100 hours, players plunge into their fantasy of stylish Tokyo as they fall in love with a number of similar characters.

Released in 2020, Persona 5 Royal was an updated and expanded version of the hit game, adding new characters, gameplay mechanics and story elements to an already feature-rich title. New events have also been added, along with optional objectives, new difficulty modes, and battle improvements. All this combined with the already beloved storyline, Persona 5 Royal has become the definitive remake of one of the best RPGs ever created.

First step

In Persona 5 Royal, players take the place of an unnamed Tokyo high school student who transferred to the city shortly before encountering an unfortunate law. Staying in his gruff family friend’s spare room above his cage, our hero enrolls in Shujin Academy High School, where he meets the first of his peers, Ryuji and Ann, who will continue to be his accomplices. Through a talking cat named Morgana, the group discover a secret world lurking in the hearts of the people around them – the Palaces.

Through a series of unexpected events, the group learns that by battling these Palaces (or, if we use traditional game language, dungeons), they can alter their target’s cognition, forcing them to repent for their abuse and manipulation. around them. Using their fighting Persona, the Phantom Thieves set out to change the hearts of the villains in their world and uncover a devious conspiracy along the way.

The dungeons in Persona 5 Royal are a joy to explore as you battle, capture and combine strange and wonderful creatures that can serve as your very own personal Persona. Exploration has been simplified in the P5R, allowing you to quickly progress between solving puzzles and winning battles using a grapple.

Combat is a traditional turn-based affair with some creative twists. If you manage to take advantage of your enemies’ weakness, you’ll knock your opponent down, and then you can perform a Baton Pass that allows one of your allies to get an extra turn. Be knowledgeable about your moves and you can turn it into a chain of powerful spells that result in a devastating All-Attack. You can also use this moment to bargain with your enemy, persuade them to leave with money or treasure, or get them to join your side.
